If you've got a fleet out on the road there will always be associated risks.
For a business that literally runs on its ability to visit clients face to face across New Zealand, it’s absolutely vital to keep a mobile sales force humming along. Committed to reducing its environmental impact and reduce fuel costs, Hachette NZ called on GreenFleet.
The Ask an Expert Adviceline is a free service for SBN members and GreenFleet participants and provides access to advice from some of New Zealand's top sustainability experts. SBN has amalgamated a panel of specialists from within the organisation, as well as from a number of expert partners, who are able to provide a response or else source the information for you. Whether you're seeking recommendations for a recycling provider, or unsure of what you should be including in your emissions calculations, contact us with any sustainability question relating to your business.
Flying on an occasional basis can add up to more CO2 emissions than the rest of your personal life combined. Even if your conscience has been overcome and you still need to board that flight to a meeting in an exotic and far-flung location, there are a few measures you can take to help reduce the impact.
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping activities are significant and account for about 600-800m tonnes of carbon dioxide, or 5% of global emissions. This was more than double those from aviation and about twice that generated by the whole UK.
Less is more - reducing business mileage
Every year, Kiwi workers drive millions of kilometres on business and use an excessive amount of fuel - but can they honestly say every kilometre was necessary?
Bicycles make great “green” transportation. Riding a bike produces no pollution, consumes no fossil fuel, and even helps you stay in shape. As an added bonus, bikes get some of the best parking places on the planet.
Next Bike s a rental bicycle service operating in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Using a mobile phone, you get a code to release the bike and are charged by the hour.

Carbon4Good
Carbon4Good is the Sustainable Business Network's tree planting programme. Businesses plant trees for a range of reasons including carbon offsets, marketing promotions, team building and gifts. For more information on tree planting click here.
Native New Zealand tree planting is an easy & tangible offset option. Trees absorb carbon as they grow & provide co-benefits for the environment and people.
Carbon4Good trees are planted by local restoration & community groups on around 20 sites in New Zealand. Over 130,000 trees have been planted since the programme began in 2001.

A recent survey shows that Auckland and Christchurch are among the top 5 countries in Australasia in terms of traffic and congestion. City councils in both areas are looking for solutions to fix this issue.

Participants in an electric vehicle trial in Wellington have been surprised and impressed with the performance of the cars. A survey of around 100 people who have been taking part in the trial of electric vehicles in the capital found those who drove them were pleasantly surprised at their power, how far they travelled before needing to be charged - and that they would willingly drive one again given the choice.
Toyota’s new Yaris hatchback offers New Zealand drivers a combination of lively driving performance, agility, fuel economy and safety for fun, stress free city driving.
84 volunteers have planted over 1,450 native trees and plants in the latest Honda TreeFund initiatives in Hawke’s Bay, Karamea Estuary and Petone Beach.
The plantings were made possible following financial contributions from the Honda TreeFund, which funds the planting of 13 native trees for every new car sold by the company. The trees are planted locally in the customers’ purchase region by the local council, Honda staff and their customers. Nationally more than 460,000 trees have been funded. The British Oxygen Company also financially contributed to the initiative.
Did you know the world’s longest traffic hold-up was between Paris and Lyon on the French Autoroute in 1980. It consisted of about 18 million cars and was 179 kilometers long—that’s about the distance from Christchurch to Timaru! Car sharing is an excellent way to prevent traffic hold-ups.

Smog filled air is foreign to most kiwis who have grown up with blue skies in "The land of the long white cloud". What many don’t realise is that our environmental position is more serendipity than design.
