GreenFleet Tips on Vehicle Maintenance

  • Keep your vehicle regularly serviced and tuned – it will save up to 5% of your fuel bill. Your vehicle will also last longer in better condition.
  • Get an emission test done on your vehicle – this will let you see how much your vehicle is polluting. Emissions testing will soon be part of our WoF test so get ahead and take action now!
  • Keep your tyres properly inflated – this will help your tyres last longer, give the most effective handling and best fuel economy.
  • Check for the amount of recycled materials present in new cars – the more recycled material the better!
  • Pick the right grade of petrol for your engine – the type of fuel used by the vehicle will affect performance and efficiency. There is also low sulphur diesel, and low emission fuel now available in New Zealand. Lower sulphur diesel enables modern European diesel engine cars to run to their optimum efficiency. Keep an eye out for ‘biodiesel’ (Step 2) which should be available at your local petrol station in the near future.
  • Try to wash your vehicle at a service station that collects the waste water for treatment. If washing at home, do it over grass so that the soapy water does not go into the stormwater drains. Stormwater drains lead directly to streams and the sea, not a wastewater treatment plant.
